I’ve been using Celtx to write the script for Botnet. It’s a great little application. It has this neat feature whereby it automatically creates a list of characters from your script, and then notes what scenes they appear in.
Unfortunately, Celtx doesn’t have the ability to “refresh” that list of characters. After it’s the characters and the scenes in which they appear are initially indexed, the info stays – even if the characters/scenes are removed.
So I wrote this Python script to keep track of the characters. First it dumps the complete list of characters according to Celtx, and then indexes its own list by reading through the script, and notes in which scenes the said characters have dialog.

A while ago, I was asked if I could do a review of Wind Mobile a few months on. I feel like I’m now at the stage where I can talk with more confidence on the service.
For the record, I have two packages with Wind Mobile – the $45/month “Always Shout” (unlimited airtime, unlimited long-distance to Canada, unlimited text messages, voice mail, call waiting) along with the $35/month unlimited data/tethering plan. That’s a total of $80/month I pay.

So things have been a little turbulent for me lately. For the last year or so, the company I work for enacted cost-cutting measures. These include:
Despite these shitty measures, I’m actually doing quite well. One reason is that for the last month and a half, I’ve been spending my evenings/weekends at a second, seasonal job.
I also now have a boyfriend that lives with me, and that’s been really cutting down on costs – not to mention making me happier in all sorts of other ways. So in the end, I have a nice apartment, a wonderful boyfriend, and enough left over to make this movie.
I’m in good shape guys. All that’s left now is to make a kick ass movie!

The film now has an official site – http://www.botnetmovie.com/ . Right now it’s a description of the project and some links, but eventually it’ll house the screenshots, trailer, and a download link as well.

I was a wee bit bored this morning, so I created a telnet chat server. You can grab the source code for the telnet chat server here. It’s in Python 2.x.
Once you have it running, clients can connect in via port 24800. The default password is SPIROU.

Well, I’m satisfied with the script in its current form. You can download it from here if you want a peek. Feedback is welcome.
In other news, I’m calling the movie “Botnet” instead of “Rice Tea.” It’s not a terribly original name, but it conveys the subject matter better than a type of tea ever did. “Digital Losers”, as was suggested by someone would have been nice as a title, but I removed all references to that term in the film script to simplify the plot.

Last post, I talked about how I ran into a crazy woman who told me “If I saw my son kissing a gay man, I’d cut off both their heads and hope that they’d hit the ground at the same time.”
Well I ran into her again! She had more words for us. So this time, I took a picture of her.

I went to Best Buy today to buy some hard drives for the Rice Tea movie. The way back by bus involves a stop over at the local Elmvale bus station.
While waiting at the station, my boyfriend was resting his head on my shoulders. He then wandered off to check the schedules. At this point, a crazy woman approached me. She said, and I quote,
If I saw my son kissing a gay man, I’d cut off both their heads [woman does slicing motion] and hope that they’d hit the ground at the same time.
Jay overhears this and comes over. I reply “I don’t care because I love him.” The crazy woman wanders off. We hadn’t kissed, but if there was any time to do it, this was it. I look at my boyfriend – “kiss?” And he gives me a great smooch. The woman is appalled and makes a grunting sound that would make Chewbaca proud. I then yell out “We can French kiss if you want!”

Artist’s Impression of Said Crazy Woman
There were young people by us, no older than 18. They laughed. So did we. The woman proceeded to tell the strangers around her about how horrible people we were. No point in getting upset over her, she evidently had some screws missing.

I just designed the emblem for Confcon 2010 for PhreakerD7 and ThoughtPhreaker. Hopefully it’ll be to their liking.

So I’m at the stage now where I’m procuring equipment for the main shoot in mid-late July. Over the last few days, I’ve purchased about $1,500 of hardware. I’m hoping to keep the final costs to under $5,000 – including costumes, travel costs, and a constant stream of food to keep the volunteer-actors happy.
The biggest expense was on today’s item: an HD camera. The camera I chose is the Panasonic HDC-TM700, which seems to be the spiritual successor to the Canon HV20. Among the qualities I needed was its ability to shoot at 24 frames per second, good low-light handling, and solid state memory.
When I’m not looking at hardware to get, I spend the rest of my time editing the script. I finished the first draft, and I’m now cutting down and editing superfluous bits that are expensive to shoot in order to cut down on the time required to organize everything. I’m also paying particular attention to the dynamic of the scenes, and making sure that they’re the right amount of time. Some of them were too short, others irrelevant or too drawn out.
As a side note, I can’t call the movie “Rice Tea.” I need a title that gives a better idea as to what the movie is about; something that’ll make the target crowd (geeks) more interested in seeing it. Do you have any suggestions? I’m all ears.
